An explosive material, or explosive, is a substance which can produce an burst of heat and gas when heat, electricity or pressure is applied to it. Explosive material is highly combustible--lower explosives will deflagrate, but high explosives instantly detonate. This creates a shortwave of heat and gas, which gives the material its destructive power.
