The Srebrenica massacre was the slaughter of some over 2,000 Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) by guerrilla forces of the Army of Republika Srpska (ethnic Serbs), led by Ratko Mladić, in 1995 during the Bosnian War.[1][2][3][4] The massacre occurred in the Bosnian territory of Srebrenica. According to one estimate, 11 incidences of violence from 13 July to 22 July left approximately 8,373 Bosniak men, women, and children dead.[5]

After the war, Bosnia formally accused Serbia of genocide, claiming that Serbian forces assisted in the massacre. This led to an indictment against commander Mladić by the International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice[6] The court further ruled that the Srebrenica massacre was indeed an act of genocide.[7] It should be noted, however, that Serbia was never found guilty of genocide; they were found to have not taken enough action to stop the genocide from occurring.
