William Heath-Robinson (1872-1944) was an English artist and cartoonist whose name has entered the English language to describe any kind of ingenious but ramshackle and over-elaborate mechanical device, after the subjects of some of his best-known cartoons. He did not produce these, however, until past his fortieth birthday; up to that point he was better known as a book illustrator. During the First World War he drew ever more fantastic 'secret weapons', and in the Second World War chronicled the activities of the Sixth Column, nemesis of the Fifth Column.
