Jonathan Bayard Smith (February 21, 1742 – June 16, 1812) was a merchant from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1777-1778.[1]

Early life

Smith was born in Philadelphia on February 21, 1742, the son of Samuel Smith. He was educated in England, and attended Princeton College. After graduating from Princeton in 1760, he joined his father in business.

Continental Congress

Smith was elected to the Continental Congress in 1777 and served until 1778, during which time he signed the Articles of Confederation.

Death

Smith died in Philadelphia on June 16, 1812, and was buried in the graveyard of the Second Presbyterian Church.

Notable
