They are not actually [[venomous]] but instead carry several strains of [[bacteria]] in their saliva, encouraging severe infections in any bite they cause. In fact, it is not unknown for Komodo dragons to charge a prey animal, attack, then follow at their leisure while they wait for the creature to become incapacitated by the infection. Komodo dragons are the largest member of the monitor family of lizards, and indeed the largest lizard species in the world; though they have a relatively low metabolism, their strength and powerful jaws allow them to remain the apex predators on the isolated islands where they live.
