Steven Patrick Morrissey is a British alternative rock star, singer songwriter, and musician born May 22, 1959 in Manchester, England to Irish parents. Morrissey has espoused many leftist positions, but in recent years has increasingly pushed against the political correctness and hatred of working-class people by the modern far-left elite.
He is most famously identified with the 1980s rock band The Smiths, as their lead vocalist and lyricist. Morrissey, also called Moz, began a successful solo career in 1987 after the Smiths disbanded.
Morrissey is famous for the deep affection he inspires in his devoted fans. His concerts often feature fans storming the stage to embrace him or just hold his hand.
Morrissey is also an outspoken supporter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
In November 2017, Morrissey stated that he would kill U.S. President Donald Trump "for the safety of humanity" if he were able to.[1][2] However, he also criticised Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton, and had also criticised Barack Obama.[3] In 2019, Morrissey revealed he supported the right-wing party For Britain: his records became the victim of cancel culture.[4]
Morrissey was also a supporter of Brexit and described the result as "magnificent", as well as criticising the liberal BBC for its anti-Brexit bias.[5] He has expressed support for conservative populist Nigel Farage[6] and Tommy Robinson.[7]
Morrisey opposes political correctness; in April 2018, the singer described the British media as "so politically correct that basic truth is actually impossible". This was in response to the liberal media calling him far-right.[8]
In 2021, Morrisey described authoritarian coronavirus lockdowns as "slavery" and criticised the fact that the political elite did not seem to be remotely affected by any of the UK governments COVID-19 restrictions.[9]
