The Battle of the Caudine Forks took place in 321 B.C. as part of the Second Samnite War between Rome and the Samnite hill tribes. The Roman counsuls Spurius Postumius and T. Veturius Calvinus were decisively defeated by Gavius Pontius and forced to surrender. After this disaster, Rome was forced to agree to a temporary peace under very unfavorable terms.
