Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, open-source email, chat (IRC), and RSS reader program created by Mozilla.

Features

Thunderbird includes features such as fast searching, smart folders, and self-learning spam blocking using Bayesian filtering. Thunderbird can also support both POP and IMAP e-mail connections—simultaneously, if desired. Also, similar to Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird offers addons to customize functionality.[1]

Compatibility

As of version 31.0, Thunderbird supports Windows XP SP2 and above, Mac OS X 10.6 through OS X 10.9, and most Linux systems.[2] Thunderbird is currently available in 53 different languages, as well.[3]

History

Thunderbird's first (beta) release took place on July 28, 2003. Version 1.0 was officially released in December of the next year.[4] Development continued for a number of years, until July 6, 2012. On this day, Mozilla announced that the company was dropping the priority of Thunderbird development.

Notes

  • Although Thunderbird is offered in 32-bit and 64-bit for Windows Vista and Windows 7, only 32-bit is officially supported.[2]
  • Thunderbird was created by Mozilla, the same organization which made Firefox
