Perelman has been sharply critical of the organized mathematical community. He is the only person to ever turn down the prestigious Fields medal, and has chosen to leave mathematical work after his proof was published. He also posted his solution of the Poincare conjecture on the internet, instead of following the standard procedure of publishing in peer reviewed journals. Since then, his proof has been reviewed independently by other mathematicians and has been found to be correct. In june 2010 he rejected the millennium prize, valued in one million dollars, due to his disagreements with the mathematical community.
