USS West Point (AP-23) was the Navy name of the SS America. In 1941, she was acquired by the US Navy to be used as a troop transport. During World War II, she sailed 436,144 nautical miles, and transported 505,020 men between 15 June 1941 and 28 February 1946. In addition to troops, she had carried Red Cross workers; United Nations officials; children; civilians; prisoners of war; and U.S.O. entertainers. [1]
