The United States Department of Commerce promotes economic growth. It was originally created as the United States Department of Commerce and Labor in 1903. It was renamed to its current name in 1913, and the labor division was transferred to the newly created Department of Labor.
The Commerce Department is in charge of governmental issues related to the economy and business. The Department is responsible for, among other things, conducting the Census and also includes the Patent Office. The current secretary of the department is Carlos M. Gutierrez.
The department's mission is "to foster, promote, and develop the foreign and domestic commerce."[1] The department is administered by the Secretary of Commerce.
