A '''feminist''' is an adherent to [[feminism]].  In recent years many feminists have argued that, because there are so many different and mutually exclusive philosophies and philosophers that are called feminist, it is more appropriate to speak of feminisms (plural) than feminism (singular) <ref>Feminisms [http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/feminism-topics/]</ref>.  For this reason it is difficult, if not impossible, to state any belief universally held by all feminists.

However, in general, feminists believe that in societies that exist today, women are less valued than men and that women should not be less valued than men (how to achieve this and whether or not women should be more valued than men are both subjects of debate among feminists).

On the issue of how women should relate to men, the Bible says in I Corinthians 11:3-12, "But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.  Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.  But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.  For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.  For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.  For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.  Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.  For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God."  Depending on how a feminist reads this passage and what feminism he or she believes in this passage can be seen as a Biblical endorsement of feminism or a Biblical rejection of feminism.

However, the wording of I Corinthians 11:3-12 could be seen as a realistic attempt by St Paul to keep within the boundaries of the social norms of his period, knowing that some of the more radical implications of the teachings of Jesus Christ might take some time to understand. As St Paul says elsewhere in Galatians 3:28, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free; there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." This demonstrates that neither men nor women are more valued in the eyes of God, and thus leads us to see how they should be treated by each other as human beings.
