The AGM-45 Shrike missile is an American anti-radiation missile which was designed to home in on an enemys antiaircraft. It was originally created in 1963 by placing a radar seeker warhead on the body of an AIM-7 Sparrow.
Service
The Shrike first went into service in 1965 in Vietnam, carried on A-4 Skyhawks. It was used against North Vietnamese radar stations. In 1966, it was adapted for use on F-105 Thunderchief attack aircraft flying "Wild Weasel" missions. The F-105s armed with Shrikes forced the enemy radar stations to shut down.
The missiles were retired in 1988 in favor of the more expensive AGM-88 HARM.
