-In the Catholic church, a heretic is anyone who teaches or preaches that which is not church doctrine or canon.  Traditionally, a suspected heretic is given an opportunity to ''recant'', or officially withdraw their heretical views and be welcomed back into the fold; a heretic who resumes his or her heretical beliefs is said to have ''relapsed''.  In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, relapsed heretics were generally turned over to the state (the ''secular arm'') for execution.
