Clemson University was founded by a man named Thomas Green Clemson, who set aside the Fort Hill plantation in his will to go towards a school that would teach scientific agriculture and the mechanical arts to South Carolinians. The college officially opened its doors in 1986 to a student body of 446. The school started out as an all-male military school, but in 1955 became a coeducational institution. It received the name Clemson University in 1964. With more than 70 undergraduate programs and 100 graduate programs the university has become home to over 17,309 students and 1,203 faculty. Students can also select from one of Clemson’s five different colleges; Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Architecture, Arts and Humanities; Business and Behavioral Science; Engineering and Science; and Health, Education and Human Development.
Thomas Clemson's original vision for the school was for it to “be a high seminary of learning in which the graduate of the common schools can commence, pursue and finish the course of studies terminating in thorough theoretic and practical instruction.” His original vision has helped make the school what it is today.
