Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica.

It was conquered by the Romans in 237 BC - it has had a checquered history of occupation, finding itself variously under [[Vandal]], [[Byzantine]], [[Arab]] and [[Genoa|Genoese]] control, finally being sold to [[France]] in 1768.
By far its most famous native was [[Napoleon]].
