After Democrat representative Elizabeth Esty announced in April 2018 that she wouldn't run for re-election in the 2018 midterm elections after sheltering a staffer who abused a female aide,[2] Hayes announced her run several months later.[3] The latter soon won the general election, defeating Republican opponent Manny Santos by over 10% of the vote.[4]
