A peace movement is a grassroots campaign or push for the establishment of world peace in general, or an end to some or all wars. Often, rather, it aims at getting one side in a war to withdraw or otherwise cease fighting (compare unilateral disarmament). In the United States, the peace movement of the 1960s called upon America to stop supporting its ally South Vietnam in the Vietnam War. The result was a US withdrawal in 1973, followed by the bloodiest 2 years of the war as North Vietnam continued its military operations, defeated the South; the new government executed, worked to death, or otherwise caused the death of over 1 million civilians (see Boat people). There was also evidence to suggest the peace movement, alongside similar movements, had been orchestrated by the Soviet Union.[1]
