Conhost.exe is a system process introduced with the Windows Vista operating system. It is used by the operating system to better integrate Command Prompt into the system.
Technical Function
This is an intermediary process between cmd.exe and csrss.exe, and as such, runs as a child process of csrss.exe. This solved both functional and security problems. Previously, Command Prompt used the old window style, and could not be changed by the system. Also, the drag-and-drop function for files onto the shell window sometimes had problems. This new process also served to protect the system core somewhat. Before this, Command Prompt ran with system privileges. Since it runs through conhost.exe now, its privileges can be downgraded to the user's.[1]
