Twinkies are cream-filled sponge cakes introduced in 1933 by the Indianapolis based Continental Baking Company. Bakery manager James Dewar came up with the idea for the Twinkie on April 6, 1930, to make more economical use of shortcake pans which otherwise sat idle when the strawberry season was over. They originally contained a banana cream filling, but this was substituted with a vanilla cream filling after banana shortages due to World War II. Since 1995, Twinkies have been produced by the Interstate Bakeries Corporation[1]. One Twinkie contains about 150 calories[2].
