The Battle of Salamis in Cyprus (306 BC) was a major naval engagement during the Wars of the Diadochi. It was fought between the fleet of Demetrius I Poliorcetes, son of Antigonus I Monophthalmus, and the forces of Ptolemy I Soter. The battle took place off the coast of Salamis on the island of Cyprus and resulted in a decisive victory for Demetrius.

Background
After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, his empire fragmented among his generals. Antigonus and his son Demetrius sought to consolidate power in the eastern Mediterranean, while Ptolemy controlled Egypt and Cyprus. Control of Cyprus was strategically important for naval dominance.

The Battle
Demetrius launched a large-scale naval campaign against Ptolemy’s forces stationed near Salamis. The battle involved hundreds of ships and showcased Demetrius’ skill in naval warfare. His fleet overwhelmed Ptolemy’s forces, capturing many ships and securing control of Cyprus.

Aftermath
The victory at Salamis had far-reaching political consequences. In celebration of the triumph, Antigonus declared himself king (basileus) and bestowed the same royal title upon Demetrius. This act prompted the other Diadochi—Ptolemy I Soter, Seleucus I Nicator, Cassander, and Lysimachus—to adopt royal titles as well, marking the formal beginning of the Hellenistic monarchies.

Significance
The Battle of Salamis in Cyprus is significant because:
* It established Antigonus and Demetrius as kings.
* It triggered the wider adoption of royal titles among the Diadochi.
* It secured Antigonid naval dominance in the eastern Mediterranean.
* It marked a turning point in the struggle for control of Alexander’s former empire.
