This refers to liberal parties such as the VVD in the Netherlands, FDP in Germany, Venstre Parti in Denmark, or FPOE in Austria, or maybe even the Liberal party in Australia. Outside of the US, the pro-businnes centre-right parties outnumber social liberal parties. You might want to look at the discussion on this subject on this page. In fact the UK Liberal Democrats are split on financial matters.  Many traditional liberal supporters advocate a higher rate of taxation for high earners, for example, but there is a growing centre-right faction which favours a lower flat rate of taxation for all.  Most UK Lib Dems however are broadly socially liberal in the classical sense - the party evolved from an amalgamation between the SDP, a break-off from the Labour party by centrist anti-militants, and the old Liberal Party of Lloyd George which had been mostly dormant for 50 or 60 years.

Traditionally the Lib Dems were the minority centre party between Labour and Conservatives - these days some might put them to the left of New Labour, even though they are expressly not Socialist. -- [[User:Olly|Olly]] 10:56, 25 April 2007 (EDT)
