Rekor Systems

Rekor Systems, Inc. (formerly known as Novume Solutions) is a publicly traded AI-powered mass surveillance company headquartered in Columbia, Maryland. They were founded in 2017 by a merger between KeyStone Solutions and Brekford Traffic Safety. They have also acquired OpenALPR Technology, Waycare, Southern Traffic Services, and All Traffic Data Services, following the company's creation. James K. McCarthy was instrumental Rekor's founding and served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, although he resigned in 2020 following an unspecified disagreement.

Purpose

Rekor primarily uses cameras to analyze traffic and identify roadway users. The system was originally marketed to cities for the purpose of traffic management and planning, and that is still a prominat part of their service. However, they have expanded into Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology and other vehicle recognition methods, so that they can individually identify each person on the road, and trace their movements over time. This capability was largely enabled by their acquisition of OpenALPR, and can be performed using both the camera systems Rekor sells, and pre-existing third-party cameras using the Rekor Scout system.

This tracking data is marketed in a variety of ways, ranging from government purposes (law enforcement, citizen tracking, toll collection, etc.) to commercial purposes (marketing, customer recognition, theft prevention, etc.).
