Midway Island (also Midway Atoll) is an atoll in the north Pacific Ocean located between Hawaii and Japan; it is a possession of the United States. Discovered in 1859, it was annexed by the US in 1867. In June 1942, a Japanese naval attack directed towards the atoll led to the Battle of Midway, one of the most significant engagements of the Pacific War.
