Lieutenant Colonel or Lieutenant-Colonel is a rank in most armies and some air forces in the English-speaking world, usually ranking above Major and below Colonel. In armies, a Lieutenant Colonel often commands a battalion. In the U.S. armed forces a lieutenant colonel is so named in the Army, Marines and Air Force; the equivalent rank is Commander in the Navy. In the British armed forces it is the equivalent of Commander (Navy), Wing Commander (RAF) and Major (Royal Marines).
