Kamchatka
Kamchatka a federal subject of the Russian Federation (a krai[1]), situated in the Russian Far East. It is administratively part of the Far Eastern Federal District.
Strategic significance
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy hosts the Russian Navy's Rybachiy submarine base, and the Russian Air Force's Yelizovo airbase. These sensitive bases and the headquarters in Vladivostok are protected by multilayered air defense systems including the S-400 and Pantsir. The approaches to these bases, through the Sea of Okhotsk and the Kuril Islands, are guarded by mobile ground-based Bastion and Bal coastal missile systems. These create an anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) barrier to deter carrier strike groups. In addition, each Yasen M class submarine in the Pacific fleet carries 32 hypersonic missiles.
