José Saramago (1922-2010) was a Portuguese author who won the 1998 Nobel prize in literature.[1] His works generally present on allegorical take on historical events.

Saramago is an atheist and, yet more bizarrely, a Stalinist. His work The Gospel According to Jesus Christ was condemned as blasphemy by the Catholic church.
