Frontex is the European Union border and coast guard agency coordinating and organizing joint operations and rapid border interventions to assist the EU-member states at the external borders, including in humanitarian emergencies and rescue at sea.[1]

Frontex came into disrepute after it turned out that, together with NGOs such as Doctors Without Borders, it operated as an ordinary ferry service for refugees coming from Libya. Instead of bringing the refugees to the nearest safe harbor (Tunis) these refugees are transferred to the Italian island of Lampedusa, where they are collected.[2]
