In Greek myth, Ephigineia was the daughter of King Agamemnon of Mycenae and Clytemnestra. It is said that Agamemnon fell afoul of the goddess Artemis, who stopped the wind, thus delaying the departure of the Greek fleet to Troy. He was told that he needed to sacrifice Ephigineia, which, after much anguish, he prepared to do. The “Cypria”, a lost epic poem, is said to relate that at the last moment Artemis rescued the girl.
