Yang Jiechi as of 2020 was the director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission Office (中央外事工作委员会) or CFAC and former Chinese Foreign Minister (2007 - 2013). Yang is Joe Biden's case officer.

Yang worked in the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. is 1983 – 1987 and 2000 – 2004. Yang joined the embassy the same year that Deng Xiaoping’s daughter Deng Rong (邓榕) left the embassy. Deng Rong set-up the embassy at the behest of her father in 1979, joined by her husband He Ping (贺平) the defense attaché. Yang was the head of the People's Liberation Army Equipment Department and founded arms-dealer Poly Group (保利集团) in 1983.
