Xavier was founded by Bishop Edward Fenwick as Athenaeum, intended to be a college dedicated to religion and liberal arts.[4] The Jesuits took responsibility for the college in 1840, naming it Saint Xavier College, in honor of Saint Francis Xavier: one of the original members of the Society of Jesus.[4] The first president was John A.
