Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, located in the south-central part of the state in Sedgwick County. The city is named after the Wichita Indian tribe. Its estimated population as of 2003 was 354,617.[1] The city is home to Wichita State University, and also was the location of the first Pizza Hut.[2]

The Wichita area was formerly represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by Republican Todd Tiahrt, who is from nearby Goddard. Tiahrt lost the 2010 Republican nomination for the United States Senate to current Senator Jerry Moran.

Around the time of World War II, Wichita took off as an aircraft manufacturing mecca, due partly to the efforts of Kansans such as aviation designer Clyde Cessna.

Among members of the Kansas House of Representatives from Wichita is the Republican Leslie Osterman.
