The Mutilation of Uranus by Cronos: by Giorgio Vasari and Cristofano Gherardi
Uranus is the Latinized form of the Greek word for sky; Ouranos (Οὐρανός). According to Hesiod's Theogony, Uranus is one of the primordial deities and is personified as both the son and husband of Gaia (Mother Earth). He was overthrown by his son, Cronus.

Most of the Greek gods owe their ancestry to Uranus and Gaia.
