Established February 25, 1847 The University of Iowa became Iowa’s first public institution of higher learning. Sprawled over 1,900 acres in Iowa City, the University of Iowa is home to over 29,979 students. Back in 1855 the university only enrolled a total of 124 students, 41 of which were women. The 1856-57 catalogue listed nine departments offering Ancient Language, Modern Language, Intellectual Philosophy, Moral Philosophy, History, Natural History, Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, and Chemistry.

The university was ranked as number 24 by U.S. News & World Report in 2008, under the category of best public university.
