Twin Oaks is a recently incorporated 4th-class city in West St. Louis County, Missouri. It had a population of 392 at the 2010 census.

History

Twin Oaks began as a collection of farmsteads on the outskirts of Valley Park in the 1920s. Around this time, since the area was rural and unincorporated, Valley Park civic leaders made plans to annex it, which the local farmers objected to since it would raise their taxes. Led by local vegetable grower James Stoker, they began raising funds to incorporate as a village: one anecdote surrounding this process is that they organized fish fries to collect money for street improvements, then did the work themselves. Thanks to such efforts as this, the village of Twin Oaks was officially incorporated in May 1938. As might be guessed, it supposedly took the name from two oak trees near what is now the intersection of Crescent Road and Crescent Avenue.[1]

The community's growth was relatively slow until the opening of nearby Interstate 44 in the early 1970s. More residential units and condominiums were built after this point, and Big Bend Square, its first retail center, began business in 1978. The expansion of Highway 141 in the 1990s added to the village's prosperity, and a pedestrian park was laid out in 1994. (After a renovation in 2011, the park's original playground equipment was donated to a community in Kyrgyzstan.[2])

In a 2016 election, Twin Oaks voters approved a measure to elevate its status to a 4th-class city. It is currently completing a redevelopment project that will add new apartments and retail establishments to the Big Bend Square area, as well as improving its Town Hall.[3]

Geography

Twin Oaks is located around the intersection of Missouri State Highway 141 and Big Bend Road in west-central St. Louis County, lying between the cities of Manchester to the north and Valley Park to the south. Its exact coordinates are 38°34′00″N 90°30′02″W.

The city lies in gently rolling terrain between Fishpot and Grand Glaize Creeks, both small tributaries of the Meramec River. It has a total land area of 0.27 square miles, and an average elevation of 594 feet.[4]

Demographics

At the 2010 census, Twin Oaks had a total of 392 inhabitants, grouped into 177 households, with a population density of 1,451.9 people per square mile. This figure represented a moderate increase from the 2000 census, when Twin Oaks had a population of 362. 97.45% of the inhabitants were White, 0.77% were African-American, 0.51% were Asian, 0.51% were from some other race, and 0.77% were from two or more races. Hispanics of any race were 1.02% of the population.

The median age in Twin Oaks was 49 years, with 14.3% of inhabitants under the age of 18, 7.7% between 18 and 24 years old, 21.4% between 25 and 44, 35.5% between 45 and 64, and 21.2% 65 years old or older. The sex ratio was 50.3% male, 49.7% female.[5]
