Thetan is a term within the belief system of Scientology which refers to the "immortal spirit being" that they believe lives inside of all human beings. It is analogous to the soul or spirit found in many other religions, with the important distinction that Scientologists believe the thetan is not exclusive to any one individual; rather, after a person's death, the thetan goes to Venus, where it is recycled by the native Venusians before being sent back to Earth and into another newborn person. Within Scientology, much effort is expended on removing negative energies that they believe have accumulated within the thetan.[1]
