Tenure is a permanent position on the faculty of a teaching institution. It ordinarily refers to teachers who have attained the highest level of distinction of professor, but it can also refer to lesser academic positions that are permanent.

It typically requires approval by a vote of other tenured faculty members.

Though initially touted as promoting academic independence from orthodoxy and established lines of research, the success of the tenure system in modern academia has been hotly debated.
