They do have a religious police, lashes are still lawful punishment, Islamic polygamy is allowed, women are restricted form obtaining a driver's license.
Yes, there is a king, but the last king was a fundamentalist Muslim, his son has promised progress and reforms but so far we haven't seen a lot.
Agreed. But the key test is in the actual balance of power between the king/princes and the religious authorities. My suggestion is this: at the moment, the religious authorities have power because of the royal family. If at any time they fancied ridding themselves of a few turbulent priests, as it were, then they could do exactly that.
The day I see a Saudi prince dragged before the religious authorities for some Sharia transgression, is the day I'll say, yes, Saudi Arabia is a true theocracy. I don't see it happening any time soon, fella. --Robledo 11:30, 12 May 2007 (EDT)
