Return to "The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam" page.

My "Oxford Dictionary of Quotations" (1990 Edition ) has: "Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough, a Flask of Wine a Book of Verse..." with the last line: "And Wilderness is Paradise enow." It also quotes the "Book of Verses underneath the Bough" version with "were Paradise enow."

My Oxford anthology of verse published in 1911 has "Oh! Wilderness were Paradise enow." as does a 1972 Oxford anthology. Take your pick - Fitzgerald revised the poem various times between 1859 and 1879. They all have "enow" meaning "enough" (Gripping eh?) AlanE 16:52, 18 October 2012 (EDT)
