How I got the New York Times references
Where I live, my local public library provides access to a number of electronic databases, including a searchable, complete database that includes every issue of The New York Times back to 1851. And I can even access it from home, by typing in my library card.
It is a very valuable resource for writing encyclopedia articles, and it is fascinating to comb through these old newspapers.
I think many libraries provide similar services. For example,
the New Jersey State Library system offers database access to anyone typing in a library card number. Dpbsmith 10:31, 20 January 2007 (EST)
