When President Trump closed the Chinese consulate in Houston, Sylvester Turner did nothing, but he defended China in a gingerly way, calling it "Houston's third-largest trading partner", and defending China's handling of the coronavirus, by saying "China helped protect Houstonians and first reporters during the COVID-19 pandemic".
