Standard

Standard has many meanings. In its most common usage, "standard" refers to a base, unchanging norm against which other values are measured. For example, the metric system defines the "gram" by a standardized mass, to ensure the continued uniformity of the measurement system. Standard may also be the base quality or quantity of an item, with additional terms qualifying as extra.

Archaic English also referred to flags, at times, as "standards."
