Second Party System was a term to describe the political situation of the United States from 1828 to 1856. During this time the major parties were the Democratic Party and the Whig Party.

This period was marked by the building of political tensions following the Era of Good Feelings as the American Civil War approached, and the era concluded with the formation of the Republican Party in 1950s.
