Scotland Yard

Scotland Yard, on the Thames Embankment in London, was from 1890 the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, the police force established in 1829 which is responsible for most of London policing and which supplies expertise to other police forces on request. It is named after the former residence of the Scottish Ambassador in London prior to the Union of the Crowns in 1603. In 1967 the Metropolitan Police moved to a new headquarters building on Victoria Street called New Scotland Yard.

Scotland Yard is used as journalistic shorthand for the Metropolitan Police (e.g. "Scotland Yard called in to crime scene").

The original headquarters building of 1890 is now called the Norman Shaw Building, after its architect, and is used as Parliamentary Offices.
