Roy Daryl Adams (born May 25, 1958) is the Independent state representative for East Baton Rouge and East and West Feliciana parishes in southeastern Louisiana.
Adams won a special election on March 30, 2019, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Republican Kenneth Edward "Kenny" Havard, who was elected on November 6, 2018 , as the president of West Feliciana Parish. In that election runoff, Adams defeated Republican Dennis Aucoin, 2,925 (54 percent) to 2,529 (46 percent).[1] Then on November 16, 2019, Adams won the general election for a full legislative term. He defeated the Republican Johnny Arceneaux, 9,491 (53 percent) to 8,327 (47 percent), nearly the same percent breakdown as the initial election in March. In this same election, Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards won a second term over the Baton Rouge Republican businessman, Eddie Rispone.[2]
One of four children of Maurice Day "Reese" Adams, Sr. (1929-1999), and the former Julia Ann Wedding,[3] he was reared in Jackson in East Feliciana Parish and graduated in 1976 from Jackson High School. He attended Southwest Mississippi Junior College in Summit, Mississippi, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He worked in the family grocery business, Adams Enterprises in Jackson. Since 2004, he has been a contractor with Capital City Press. Adams and his wife, Tanya, have four children, Jarid Adams of St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish, Jermi Adams and his wife, Ashley, of Zachary in East Baton Rouge Parish, Jada and husband, Jude Barber, of Metairie in Jefferson Parish, and youngest son, Jayce Adams of Jackson.[4]
Adams and his family are members of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. He describes his political views as "moderate." Adams said that he did not run as "a candidate for a particular party, but rather, as an Independent so that I can equally represent each and everyone living in our lovely District 62."[4]
Adams joins Democrats in choosing House Speaker
On January 13, 2020, Adams and his fellow Independent legislator, Joseph Marino of Gretna in Jefferson Parish joined twenty-three Moderate Republican lawmakers, known as the Fraud Squad, who voted for Clay Schexnayder of Gonzales in Ascension Parish as the House Speaker. Schexnayder depended heavily on the votes of thirty-five Democratic lawmakers, the Independents, and the Republican defectors. Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards made contacts on Schexnayder's behalf. The forty-five conservative Republicans in the House were outfoxed by the twenty-three Moderates and the two Independents.[5]
