Ralph David Abernathy, Sr. (March 11, 1926 – April 17, 1990) was an American civil rights leader and mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr. A Baptist minister, he was a strong leader in the Civil Rights Movement to successfully fight for the rights of blacks.
While a registered member of the Democratic Party, Abernathy was especially conservative on social issues, being an outspoken opponent of abortion.[1] Like principled conservative Christians today, he also opposed pornography and abhorred the sexual revolution.[2] Abernathy strongly opposed illegal immigration as well.[3]
