A QR code (quick response code) is a machine-readable code, know as a matrix barcode. It was invented by the Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave, in 1994. They can contain a wide variety of information, such as web URIs, payment information, wireless network connection information, and other unique identifiers (such as used by "vaccine passports"). They can be used in industrial applications for purposes such as product tracking, or consumer purposes, such as directing users to websites.[1]
