Pepe the Frog is a popular meme which originated as a cartoon character from the comic strip Boyz Club. Despite the left and even its original creator deeming it as racist or at least co-opted by the alt-right and repurposed to express white nationalist messages, conservatives have defended it, claiming it is not inherently bigoted at all.[1] Protesters in Hong Kong in 2019 utilized the symbol, in addition to the American flag and national anthem, to represent their desire for freedom, liberty, and independence from China.[2][3] YouTuber PewDiePie praised it, along with other politically incorrect memes, while criticizing outrage culture and mob hysteria.[4][5]
