Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) was an American poet and physician known for his teaching, medical research and writing the "Breakfast-Table" series of essays.

He is not to be confused with his son, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who was a prominent liberal and atheistic Supreme Court Justice.
