Nonalignment is a policy of neutrality by nations who refused to ally themselves with a country. One exapmple is the during the Cold War several developing nations refused to join either the USA or the USSR. Sweden was well known for refusing to ally with any side for a long time, only changing its position in 1995, becoming more involved in the European Union.
